Opening the kiln

Being a potter, one of the most exciting times is when you open the kiln after the final firing.  It is a mixed bag of feelings.  Sometimes I pick the pieces up and rub them down, feeling really pleased with the outcome, other times, they have a rustic - home made look (which I love).  Then, there are the times when the pieces have broken or cracked.  Using porcelain you just never know what you are going to find.  My tutor told me 'never to fall in love with a piece until it comes out of the kiln for the last time!' Very good advice!
